general procedure

The first thing to consider before committing to a portrait commission is that you are commissioning me for my artistic interpretation of the subject. Even though I work in a representational manner, I'm not a photo-realist and make no guarantees to photographic likeness. Therefore, I encourage you to look over the work on my site which can be viewed in the home page slideshow.

When working with your photos, as in the case for surprise gifts or posthumous portraits, I can work with whatever images you have on hand. To get the best likeness, a selection of high-quality photos would be ideal. Whenever it's an option  I  prefer to arrange the photography since my needs for composition and lighting are specific to portrait painting.  Photos are taken at my studio, at your home, or other preferred location. A photo session of approximately one hour will be held at your convenience with both myself and my photographer. The typical fee for a photo session is $150 and is used to pay my photographer for her time and talent.  The fee is complementary if the cost of the portrait exceeds $1,500.

If you live outside Toronto or have little room in your schedule to meet with me, then you can email me the jpegs and we can go from there. Once we go over the photos and decide on the composition a due date will be set, a deposit placed, and the portrait can be started. Commissions can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months, depending on my schedule. Therefore, it's  a good idea to plan ahead if you have a special date in mind.

payment

A minimum deposit of at least 50% is required when confirmation is made to begin any work relating to the portrait. The balance is due upon completion. The initial deposit will secure a place on my calendar and I will stay in regular contact with you as we move along.

delivery

Delivery arrangements are made in consultation with you. Custom framing is available through my studio, but you are under no obligation to frame it through me. Please keep in mind commissions are non-refundable.
